How to Protect Your Concrete Driveways

Over time, concrete driveways can crack and those cracks can become places where people trip. None of us want to have people tripping in the driveway and getting injured because those injuries can become claims on our home insurance. If we can keep those cracks from becoming a problem, then we can often keep our premiums lower. All it takes is a little annual maintenance to help keep concrete driveways safer. House with Truck in Driveway

  1. Annually clean your concrete driveway. Most home improvement stores sell concrete cleaner that you can use with a power washer. Those same stores will rent power washers, or you can have someone do it for you for a few hundred dollars.

  2. Seal your concrete driveway. Every two years, reseal the concrete. Hardware stores and concrete material suppliers usually sell a sealer that you can apply yourself.

  3. Careful of de-icers. If you use de-icing in the winter, as soon as the weather is warm, clean the chemicals off your concrete driveway. That will help keep the chemicals from eating away at the concrete.

  4. Repair cracks. Once a year, take time to find all the cracks, even hairline cracks. Use an epoxy concrete patch, grout or vinyl concrete patch to seal the cracks. Repairing the cracks will keep them from spreading and becoming larger over time.

  5. Kill weeds and grass. If you have weeds and grass growing up in cracks of your concrete driveway, use a strong weed and grass killer to kill them. Don't let them keep growing since they can cause significant damage.

Five steps to keeping your concrete driveway looking great and safer. Take time each year to do these tasks yourself, or hire someone to take care of your driveway for you.
