What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident

The steps you must take after a motorcycle accident are very similar to those you must take after a car accident. However, if you’re cautious enough to have never been involved in any type of accident, you might not know these steps. It’s always a good idea to brush up on this process, just in case you’re involved in an accident in the future. Let’s get started. motorcycles on the road

  • Check to see if anyone is injured. If so, then call 911 immediately. If not, call the non-emergency police number so the police can visit the scene of the accident and write up a police report, which insurance providers use to help determine fault.
  • If possible, move all vehicles off the roadway to a safer location, like the shoulder of a highway or a nearby parking lot.
  • Exchange information with all drivers involved in the accident. Take down names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information (provider and policy number), vehicle information (make, model and year), driver’s license numbers and license plate numbers. Additionally, take pictures of the damage to the vehicles and the scene of the accident.
  • Document the location of the accident, including the street, intersection, nearby landmarks, speed limits and direction of travel.
  • If witnesses stopped to help, take notes of their accounts of the incident.
  • Never admit fault or apologize. It’s up to the police and insurance companies to determine fault and an apology can affect the amount of money you’re able to collect later on.
  • Don’t make any repairs until an insurance adjuster has officially documented the damage to help ensure you get fully compensated for your losses. Additionally, keep records of all associated expenses, including repairs, medical bills, rental vehicles and missed days of work.
  • If you suffer serious injuries in a motorcycle accident, seek medical help first. Then, contact a personal injury attorney for help recovering monetary compensation.

We’ll help you through the claims process. Call Jack Russell Insurance Agency at 770-968-5171 for more information on motorcycle insurance.
